Making an A4 poster using the Gimp

Lesson 5

We're very close to finishing now, some minor touches, like adding some fuel to our burning letters might be nice. As the idea is to get people to contribute money or charcoal to the street party, I combined many British pound signs, flipped, rotated and moved to overlap with each other to attempt to try and make it resemble pieces of charcoal. This was naturally done on a new layer, using the text tool to place a single pound sign on the layer, and then detaching the transform menu (click the dotted line on the menu to detach any menu) to make it easier to use. Then there was a great repetition of copying, pasting and moving...
A final bit of text, persuading folk to get their hands in their pockets or bring round some charcoal is needed. For this we'll use the dynamic text tool, so that we have greater control over the formatting and re-editing of the text. I filled a couple of words with some nice patterns to give them a bit more interest. Use the tipped paint tin and double-click to set 'pattern' and double-click the pattern square in the tool box to bring up the patterns.

Once that is done, our final task is to make the background a little more friendly (though white is cheap!), by adding a faint texture to it. To do this, create another layer just above the background (higlight the background layer, and press Ctrl + N) and press Ctrl + A to select the whole layer, and then fill it with a pattern. To reduce the strength of the pattern, reduce the opacity of the layer (see slider bar on layers dialogue box.

If you like, you can download the final xcf file here to play with, but beware, it's a whopping 1.6 MB download! Still, with the xcf file you'll get all the detail and all the layers exactly as I left them. If you want to just see a better quality image, then try this jpg file, which at 83k is more manageable.

Have fun and please don't hesitate to give me feedback!
